Watercolor sketch in Canson Montval All-Media sketchbook (90-lb cold press paper). Approx. 9"x 12" (22.9 cm x 30.5 cm).
This is another exercise in "Painting Watercolors" by Cathy Johnson. Further application of foliage practice, and incorporating fall foliage studies posted previously.
I did most of the tree trunks and limbs using either my rigger brush (Winsor Newton Scepter Gold II no. 2) or palette knife (I prefer the effect I got from the palette knife...).

Great job on this - Kate's books are excellent aren't they?
what a FABULOuS job!! Loose and yet so beautifully done! Love the colors and composition!!
Kate's book ARE excellent, and contain some great exercises. I have to give credit to Kate for the composition and color selection, but thanks for the wonderful comments. It was a fun exercise!
Clearly, I must get her books... even though I'm venturing into oils more and more. This is GORGEOUS... and that's about what YOU'VE done with the information presented. We've all followed "recipies" and ended up with mush. No need for false humility!!
