Watercolor Sketch - Dallas Farmer's Market
Watercolor in Canson Montval All-Media sketchbook, 90-lb CP paper, approx. 9" x 12" (22.3 x 35.0 cm). Pigma Micron 01 pen.
I painted this watercolor sketch from a photo I took while in Dallas, TX in April. The Dallas Farmer's Market is alive with color and with people, and I had some excellent Mexican food there. This little food stand is at the north end of the Market.

(Some) Art in Boston
I was in Boston recently. There's so much to see there, I didn't really have any time to paint or sketch. I didn't even visit any art museums; however, always vigilant about noticing art-related stuff, I snapped photos of several things that caught my interest.
I spotted this display of watercolor prints for sale at the corner of Dartmouth and Newbury Streets. The artist, Charlie Wang, paints watercolor landscapes of various points of interest in Boston, such as Fenway Park, Boston Common, cityscapes, etc.
While waiting for a table for lunch along Newbury Street, I saw this man painting this large oil painting en plein air. I asked permission to take his photo, but he didn't give me his name, seeming too busy for the distraction of admirers...
I saw this headstone for Gilbert Stuart while walking in Boston Common. The headstone reads, "Painter of the portrait of Washington, Louis XVI and Geo. III. This tablet was placed by the Paint and Clay Club 1897" Stuart's unfinished 1796 painting of George Washington, also known as "The Athenaeum," is his most celebrated and famous work, and is the basis for the image of George Washington on the U.S. one-dollar bill.
This marker for John Smibert was attached to a fence around Old Granary Burying Ground near Boston Common along the Freedom Trail (John Hancock and Paul Revere are buried in this cemetery). Smibert was a colonial painter and served as the architect for historic Faneuil Hall in Boston.

Watercolor Sketch - On the Grounds of the Elms
Watercolor in Canson Montval All-Media sketchbook, 90-lb CP paper, page approx. 9" x 12", sketch 6" x 9" (15.2 x 22.8 cm). Pigma Micron 03 pen.
Sketched on the grounds of the Elms Resort & Spa in Excelsior Springs, MO.
My wife and I traveled to Excelsior Springs, MO this past weekend to attend this month's sketchcrawl hosted by Kate Johnson. We met at the Elms Resort & Spa at 1:00 pm CDT, which was a beautiful, historic hotel with lovely grounds. There were three of us in all, including Kate, and we set out upon the grounds of the hotel to pick a spot at which to sketch & paint. I picked this old set of stairs to sketch; it was behind a large gazebo in which a couple of weddings were taking place that day. The cottonwood was really flying; at one point, I looked up into the sky and it looked like it was snowing!
At about 3:30 pm, we convened back in the hotel for a cold soda and to chat about art, our sketchbooks, and whatever else came up. Kate is a wonderful host, and a wonderful artist; check out her work if you get a chance--you won't be disappointed!

Watercolor Sketch - Cades Cove, TN
Watercolor in Canson Montval All-Media sketchbook, 90-lb CP paper, page approx. 9" x 12", sketch 6" x 9" (15.2 x 22.8 cm).
We were in the Knoxville, TN area, near Great Smokey Mountain National Park, over the Memorial Day holidays, and it reminded me of a trip we took to the park a few years ago. So, in tribute, I dug out a photo I took on a previous trip and did a sketch from the photo reference.
